In March 2008, EuroChem Minerals and Chemicals Company won a bid to extract reserves at the Palashersky and Balakhontsevsky sites of the Verkhnekamskoe potassium field in the Perm Territory. The site’s known reserves sold for 4.08 thousand million roubles and consist of 1,553 million tons of sylvinite and 499 million tons of carnallite.

With the acquisition, EuroChem demonstrated its strategy to develop potassium fields as its base product line in the fertilizer business.

Processing facilities yielding an annual volume of 2.0 to 2.5 million tons of potassium will require investment of no less than 40 billion roubles. EuroChem’s mineral resource potential, including a joint venture for developing potassium reserves in the Volgograd Region, enable processing of 5 to 7 million tons of potash chloride annually by 2018, which will make up about 10 percent of the world’s potassium market.

An affiliate of the Kovdor mineral processing plant has been established to further develop the Verkhnekamskoe potassium fields in Usolie (Perm Territory). With its start-up along with the comparable Gremyachinskoe mineral field now under development, EuroChem will be the largest mineral fertilizer manufacturer in Russia and fourth worldwide, offering a complete range of mineral fertilizers using its own raw materials.

Apart from developing new potassium reserves, the EuroChem project in the Perm Territory will establish a new base of raw materials, production capacity, and product line diversification – all while creating 2,300 new jobs for residents of Usolie.
