In 2003, the Management Board of CJSC EuroChem Mineral and Chemical Company decided to build its own specialized terminal for loading mineral fertilizers from railway cars onto sea vessels in Tuapse.

To serve its exports, the Company must currently use ports in neighboring countries that are far from EuroChem’s main facilities. Transportation costs within Russia alone raise mineral fertilizer prices by 15 to 25 percent. Customs and transportation tariffs imposed by adjoining states further add to delivery costs. Constructing a specialized mineral fertilizer transshipment terminal in Tuapse can considerably reduce the costs of delivery to port and transshipment to sea vessels.

The criteria used to select the terminal’s location include: Tuapse’s proximity to EuroChem production sites, additional traffic capacity offered by the Tuapse railway station, the availability of port infrastructure for safely handling heavy-tonnage vessels, and favorable weather conditions for uninterrupted year-round operations.

The annual capacity for transshipping dry granulated mineral fertilizers is projected to be 2.3 million tons. With the terminal constructed, EuroChem will be able to earn predictable and steady profits from stevedore operations in mineral fertilizer transshipment, to reduce the shipment and transshipment costs for its own fertilizers at sea ports, to become an independent player in the stevedore services market, and to create new jobs.

As of today, a crossing has been commissioned, finishing works are under way on the administration building, an assembly of steelwork galleries is nearing completion, and construction of the upper deck wharf is in progress. Work is also under way on an assembly of triangular metal arches (with a vertical bottom section for a future mineral fertilizer storage facility), as is concrete work on the lower platform of the conveyor unit in the unloading yard.
