The project is geared towards fulfilling one of Kovdorskiy GOK's strategic development initiatives, namely increasing production of apatite and baddeleyite concentrate. Baddeleyite concentrate is a rare zirconium oxide mineral used for the manufacture of fire-resistant, abrasive materials etc. The actual gravity process renovation requires the installation of modern, high-efficiency facilities within the apatite-baddeleyite concentrating mill's production area. A brand new technology for separating the concentration of hard- and fine-grained baddeleyite-iferous products has been developed as part of the project. Utilising this technology can considerably increase the rate of production. Renovation of the gravity concentration process should be completed in 2009. Kovdorskiy GOK is an exclusive baddeleyite producer and both Russian and international demand for this product are outgrowing supply. Baddeleyite concentrate production reached 3,658 tonnes in 1st half of 2009. Manufacturing renovations and the introduction of new technology will increase the volume of baddeleyite extraction and increase baddeleyite concentrate production by more than 2,000 tonnes a year.
