Alexander Savenkov, Executive Director

Novomoskovsky Azot is one of the largest and oldest chemical enterprises in Russia and Europe.

First output of ammonia produced from coking coal, nitric acid, and mineral fertilizers was obtained in 1933; in 1936 chlorine products manufacturing started, from salt extracted in local deposits.

When Hitlerite troops occupied Novomoskovsk (former name - Stalinogorsk), the integrated works was completely destroyed. Right after the liberation of the town in December 1941, reconstruction of the enterprise started and as early as a year later Novomoskovsk chemists produced first tones of ammonia for the country.

On May 9, 1945 the enterprise started manufacturing non-war products (mineral fertilizers). In 1949 calcium chloride production plant was commissioned. Four years later synthetic urea production was launched at a new plant - a high-analysis fertilizer widely used in plastics, resin and adhesive production.

In 1958 Novomoskovsk chemists mastered ammonia and mineral fertilizers production from natural gas. To sum it up, from 1959 till 1965 28 economics facilities were built, among which nitrophoska (for the first time recoreded in the USSR), urea, ammonium nitrate, compounds, weak nitric acid, chlorine products and organic synthesis production lines. During 1970-1980s large unit capacities for ammonia and mineral fertilizers production were launched, as a result of which the integrated works became the USSR largest ammonia and nitric fertilizers producer.

The period of transition to the market economy in 1990s was a severe test for the enterprise which was in a great necessity of significant renovation of productive capacities. Joining to EuroChem in 2002 offered Novomoskovsky Azot an opportunity to sustain dynamic growth, start technical upgrading of plants and facilities, launch advanced technologies and new products.

The enterprise opened a new methanol plant with a capacity of 300,000t/yr (its construction had started in 1985); launched nitrophoska grade NPK 16:16:16 production, as well as new NP fertilizers, and stabilized ammonium nitrate; started production of deicing agent N???, and dimethyl ether - clean fuel of 21 century, and reconstructed polyvinylchloride resin palnt.

Great importance is attributed to the environment protection at the enterprise and the surrounding area. Gross emissions cut thanks to the reconstruction and upgrading of existing facilities, introduction of new high-technology production lines, automated control systems, enhanced process control. Particulate matter emissions were considerably reduced.

Currently Novomoskovsky Azot is a highly mechanized and automated operation with advanced capacities enhanced with state-of-the-art technologies and equipment. Every ninth ton of ammonia and nitric fertilizers in Russia is produced here. For 70 years of operation the enterprise produced nearly 46mt of ammonia, i.e. 4.3 of its current annual output in Russia; over 16mt of mineral fertilizers (on 100% nutrient content basis); 5.2mt of methanol.

The products of Novomoskovsky Azot, located in the central part of Russia, is in great demand in the Central and Southern Federal Districts. The products are sold to USA, UK, Turkey, Brazil, Mexico, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Baltic States and other countries.

Novomoskovsky Azot is a local economic mainstay with over 8,500 employees. The management pays special attention to social policy. Part of the enterprise income is invested in maintenance of a medical clinic, former house of young technicians, library and other facilities. Enterprise employees receive partly reimbursement for transport costs; get discounts for traveling to the health resorts with their families.

Novomoskovsky Azot takes active part in sponsoring municipal social programs, makes charitable contributions to children's educational institutions, municipal medical institutions, the crew of strategic atomic missile submarine cruiser Novomoskovsk, regional Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Association of the Trade Council.

Carbamide Production Expansion and Modernization Investment Project

EuroChem has recently made significant investments in developing carbamide production at Novomoskovsky Azot.

In 2007, the company embarked on an investment program to modernize its Carbamide-3 workshop and convert production to granulated products with a capacity of 2,000 tons per day. This ambitious, large-scale project is to be implemented in stages over two years with a total budget over RUR 2 billion.

A project for expanding carbamide production by 1,150 tons per day is currently under way at Novomoskovsky Azot utilizing a unit to be transferred from Serbia.

EuroChem’s Board of Directors made the decision to expand carbamide output back in June 2007.

Total investment in this global project is over RUR 5.5 billion. To date, the implementation is 40 percent complete, and construction is scheduled for completion in the second quarter of 2010.

General contractor services for the project are being provided by Novomoskovsk-Remstroyservis, a subsidiary of EuroChem.

Such projects are new both within Russia and the CIS countries. Once implemented, Russia will have its first carbamide facilities that use fluid bed granulation, a modern technique developed by Stamicarbon. This technology will result in more durable, uniformly-sized product, increased carbamide-production capacity, and an improved position for Novomoskovsky Azot in the exclusive U.S. and West-European markets. It will also reduce the amount of raw materials per unit of product to be on par with world standards for energy consumption (0.9 Gcal per ton of end product).

Granulated carbamide is produced in only three other countries: Germany, Egypt, and Canada.

Upon completion of the aforementioned projects, Novomoskovsk Azot will become Russia’s first granulated carbamide producer that will generate the largest output in Europe and the CIS, exceeding 4,000 tons per day.
