Lifosa is the largest producer of phosphate mineral fertilizers in the Baltic states and one of the industry leaders in the European Union.
The birthday of the enterprise (former Kedainiai Chemical Plant) is considered to January 18, 1963, when the first tons of sulphuric acid were produced. Other facilities were built around the sulphuric acid plant. As early as in December 1963 first tons of powdered superphosphate were produced, followed by granulated superphosphate and aluminium fluoride in 1964. In 1969, ammophos and phosphoric acid plants were commissioned, and in 1972 a fertilizer blending plant was built to produce phosphoric-potassium fertilizers. In 1975, a long-term modernization and reconstruction project was launched which led to environment protection system and labor conditions improvement.
In 1989 the enterprise got a new "heart" - with a closure of the old sulphuric acid plant and more compact and convenient SK-50 start-up. But this line could not avoid reconstruction as a result of which annual production capacity of sulphuric-acid monohydrate increased from 500,000t to 1,120,000t, and the opportunity arose to sell the electricity surplus and used up thermal power to the third parties.
In 1998, after the improvement of the existing process for ammophos production the enterprise launched a new product ? diammonium phosphate, with more balanced nitrogen and phosphorus content. In 2001, dicalcium phosphate production started, in 2002 the enterprise started producing powder and granular monocalcium phosphate, and in 2004 - monodicalcium phosphate.
Following the privatization in 1996 the Chemical Plant was renamed to AB Lifosa. Phosphate fertilizers market crisis in 2000 resulted in production and financial performance decline of the company. Joining to EuroChem Mineral and Chemical Company and attraction of necessary investment provided an opportunity to avoid Lifosa breakdown: the enterprise paid all debts, expanded the product mix, started technical upgrading.
Since June 2003 quality and environment management systems have been operating at Lifosa in accordance with the international standard requirements ISO 9000 and ISO 14000.
The certificates awarded have enhanced Lifosa image as reliable producer of quality products. The enterprise products are in great demand in Ireland, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, UK, the Netherlands, Spain, Italy, Poland, Puerto-Rico, Pakistan, India, Cameron, South Africa, Turkey, Estonia, Latvia, Hungary, Ukraine, Russia, Romania, Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Yugoslavia.
